How to Encourage Yourself in the Lord When Life Falls Apart

There are moments in life when everything seems to collapse at once. Your peace is gone, your hope feels distant, and you are left standing in the ashes of what used to be. If you have ever been there, the story of David in 1 Samuel 30 was written for you.

What Happened to David at Ziklag?

David and his men returned home to Ziklag to find it burned to the ground. Their wives, sons, and daughters had been taken captive by the Amalekites. The Bible describes the scene with heartbreaking detail. The smell of smoke still hung in the air. The laughter of children was replaced by silence. No one knew if their families were even still alive.

"And when David and his men came to the city, they found it burned with fire, and their wives and their sons and daughters taken captive." - 1 Samuel 30:3

David and his men wept until they had no more strength to weep. And then grief turned to anger. His own men, bitter over the loss of their families, began talking about stoning him. David was completely alone, standing in the rubble of everything he had built.

Has the Enemy Stolen Something from You?

We put locks on our doors and cameras on our homes to protect our physical belongings. But there are areas of our lives that are often left exposed. These are the places where an unseen enemy can slip in and steal what matters most.

The Bible is clear about this kind of theft. Jesus described the enemy as one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Sometimes it is your peace that gets taken as worry piles up. Sometimes it is your joy, your purpose, your dreams, or your faith. One moment everything is in place, and the next it is gone.

Many people have been robbed of precious things and do not even realize what happened or how to get them back.

What Does It Mean to Encourage Yourself in the Lord?

In the middle of his darkest moment, David did something remarkable.

"But David strengthened himself in the Lord His God." - 1 Samuel 30:6

He did not wait for someone to come alongside him. He did not wait for circumstances to improve. He encouraged himself in the Lord. This is one of the most powerful turning points in all of Scripture, and it is a discipline every believer needs to develop.

The Bible does not spell out exactly what David did, but there are practical steps that reflect what this looks like in real life.

Step 1: Take Control of Your Mind

Your emotional mind, when left unchecked, is like a team of spooked horses. If you do not grab the reins, it will run wild through anxiety, fear, and worst-case scenarios. The Apostle Paul addressed this directly.

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God." - 2 Corinthians 10:5

What do you know about God? He is not out to harm you. He is not trying to steal from you. The Bible tells us plainly that God is love, and that the Greek word used there, agape, means affection, benevolence, and goodwill. He has only good in mind for you.

There is a difference between listening to yourself and talking to yourself. Most of our unhappiness comes from passively listening to an internal conversation that is not rooted in truth. You have to stop listening and start speaking the truth of God over your own mind. Your head has to lead. When your thinking goes in the right direction, your heart and emotions will eventually follow.

Step 2: Stand on the Word God Has Given You

God's word is His promise, and His promise does not change based on your circumstances.

"God is not a man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?" - Numbers 23:19

If God said it, He will make it good. Everything that contradicts His word is a lie. When your house, your bank account, or your situation seems to be telling you one thing, you can look at it and say, that is not what God promised me. That is not who He is.

If you do not have a specific word from God for your situation, get one. Spend time in His presence. And while you are waiting, lean on the written Word. He promises to save, to deliver, to heal, to provide, and to be with you always.

"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." - Isaiah 41:10

Why Does God Only Give You One Step at a Time?

Once David encouraged himself, he did not just sit there and feel better. He took action. He asked the priest to bring the ephod, a garment used to discern the will of God, and He asked two specific questions: Should I pursue? Will I overtake them?

God answered yes to both. But David still did not have all the information. He did not know who took his family, which direction they went, or how far away they were. He just had a word to pursue.

God rarely gives you all the information up front. He gives you a glimpse, a single step, and He asks you to act on it before He gives you more.

"For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little." - Isaiah 28:10

God is a God of journeys. He wants to walk with you, not hand you a map and send you off alone. You pick up your cues and follow the clues, and as you take one step of faith, the next step is revealed.

What Happens When You Start Moving Toward Your Promise?

David got on his horse and started riding. He did not have a plan. He just had a word. And as he moved, something remarkable happened. He and his men came across an Egyptian man lying in a field, nearly dead. They stopped, gave him water and food, and when his strength returned, the man revealed that he was a servant of an Amalekite. He had been part of the very raid on Ziklag.

David did not find this man by sitting in the ashes and praying for more information. He found him because he was moving. God orchestrated a divine appointment that provided the exact intelligence David needed, but only because David was already in motion.

When you start walking toward your promise, things begin to appear. Doors open. People show up. Opportunities surface. But you have to be moving first.

"For to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away." - Mark 4:25

You do not get more from God until you act on what He has already given you. That is the law of use. Use it or lose it.

How Did David Take Back What Was Stolen?

The Egyptian man led David and his men directly to the enemy's camp. And David fought them from twilight until the evening of the next day, 24 to 36 hours straight. He was not going to stop until he had recovered everything.

When your opportunity comes to take back what the enemy has stolen, whether it is your joy, your peace, your purpose, or your family, you fight with passionate prayer and fervent faith. This is not the time to be timid. You deal with the Spirit of discouragement so fiercely that it does not want to come back.

Life Application

This week, identify one area of your life where the enemy has stolen something precious. Maybe it is your peace, your joy, your sense of purpose, or your confidence in God's promises. Do not stay in the ashes. Take these three steps:

  • Grab ahold of your mind and redirect it toward what God says is true.

  • Find a specific promise in Scripture that speaks to your situation and declare it out loud over yourself daily.

  • Take one step of faith in the direction of your promise, even if you do not have all the answers yet.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect this week:

  • What has the enemy stolen from me that I have accepted as a permanent loss?

  • Am I listening to my circumstances, or am I speaking the truth of God over them?

  • What is the one step of faith I know I need to take, but have been waiting to take until I have more information?

  • Am I waiting for God to move before I move, or am I willing to start walking and trust Him to meet me on the road?

Today is the day to stand up from the ashes of your disappointment. Encourage yourself in the Lord, stand on His promises, and start moving forward in faith. It is time to look the enemy in the eye and declare with authority: I am taking it back.
